What is AI SEO, and will AI replace SEO?

Short answer

AI SEO means two different things: (1) using AI tools to do SEO work, and (2) optimizing a website so that AI search — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews — finds, understands and cites it. The second meaning is also called GEO, AEO or LLMO. AI will not replace SEO: Google and Bing build their AI answers on indexed web pages, and both list the same SEO fundamentals as conditions for appearing in their AI features.

Two meanings of AI SEO

In our AnswerThePublic data for the United States (October 2026), “ai seo”, “ai for seo” and “ai in seo” are each searched about 8,100 times a month, “what is ai seo” about 390 times, and “what is ai seo called” about 260 times. Behind these searches are two different questions:

AI for SEO SEO for AI
What it is Using AI tools to research keywords, draft texts, audit sites Optimizing a site to be found and cited by AI assistants and AI search
Other names — GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI search optimization
Goal Do SEO faster Be named in AI answers

Both are useful, but they should not be confused: writing texts with AI does not by itself make AI recommend your business.

Is AI-generated content allowed by Google?

Google answered this in its Search Central blog on 8 February 2023: its ranking systems aim to reward original, high-quality content that demonstrates E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness), and the quality of content matters more than how it was produced.

There is a limit. Google’s spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings and not to help users, and name “using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users” as an example.

In practice: AI can help write and edit, but every page must contain real value — facts, experience, examples — that a person checked. Hundreds of generated pages without that are a risk, not a strategy.

Will AI replace SEO?

“Will AI replace SEO” and “Is SEO dead now with AI?” are among the questions people ask in Google. The sources point to change, not disappearance:

  • Google: to be shown as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Google’s recommendations for AI features are the familiar SEO basics — allowing crawling, internal links, content in text, page experience, structured data matching visible text.
  • Bing: its Webmaster Guidelines describe how Bing discovers, crawls, indexes and surfaces content across Bing search, Copilot and grounding results, and start with SEO fundamentals.
  • OpenAI: ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, including Bing, plus its own OAI-SearchBot crawler — again, a search index underneath.

What changes is the goal. Previously SEO meant “rank in the list”; now it also means “be the source the AI answer is built on”. The work grows: besides rankings, you need clear facts, answers to specific questions and consistent information about the company everywhere.

What to do in practice

  1. Keep the SEO basics in order: indexing in Google and Bing, sitemap, robots.txt that does not block search and AI search crawlers, fast mobile pages.
  2. Write for questions: one page or section per real customer question, with the answer in the first sentences.
  3. Add verifiable facts: prices, numbers, examples and sources. The GEO research found that quotations, statistics and citations increased visibility in AI answers the most.
  4. Use AI tools as assistants, not as a page factory.
  5. Measure both: rankings and traffic for SEO, mentions and citations for AI search. Read more in AI visibility: what it is and how to measure it.

FAQ

What is AI SEO?

Either using AI tools for SEO work, or optimizing a website to be found and cited by AI search. The second meaning is also called GEO, AEO or LLMO.

What is SEO for AI called?

Most often GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO (LLM optimization) or simply AI SEO. They describe largely the same work.

Will AI replace SEO?

No. Google, Bing and ChatGPT search all rely on search indexes, and Google and Bing list SEO fundamentals as conditions for appearing in their AI features. SEO is changing, not disappearing.

Does Google penalize AI-generated content?

Not for being AI-generated. Google says quality matters more than how content is produced, but generating many pages without value for users to manipulate rankings is scaled content abuse.

Can AI do SEO by itself?

AI tools can speed up research and writing, but decisions, facts and checking remain human work; mass-generated pages without added value violate Google’s spam policies.
