Schema.org markup for AI search: does it help, and what to mark up
Yakiv Romanchuk, founder of JW2D · Published
Short answer
Schema.org markup helps search engines understand a page and the company behind it, but it is not a ticket into AI answers. Google states that no special markup is needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing says structured data may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility. Both require markup to match the visible text. Since 7 May 2026 Google no longer shows FAQ rich results. Organization or LocalBusiness markup with consistent company data remains the most useful starting point.
What structured data does
Google explains that it uses structured data found on the web to understand the content of a page and to gather information about entities such as people, books or companies. It supports JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa and recommends JSON-LD where the site setup allows it.
What Google and Bing say about markup and AI
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Google, AI features | No new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; structured data should match the visible text |
| Google, structured data guidelines | Markup belongs on the page the information applies to; do not mark up information users cannot see |
| Bing, Webmaster Guidelines | Structured data may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility or grounding traffic; markup must accurately reflect visible content |
Conclusion: markup is a supporting signal. It helps machines read facts precisely, but without indexing and clear visible content it will not bring a site into AI answers.
What happened to FAQ markup in 2026
- August 2023 — Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites.
- 7 May 2026 — according to Google’s Search Central updates, the FAQ rich result feature no longer appears in Google Search.
- 15 June 2026 — Google removed the documentation for the FAQ rich result feature.
FAQPage is still part of the schema.org vocabulary, and adding it does no harm if the questions and answers are visible on the page. But there is no longer a visual reward in Google, and we found no official statement that AI systems prefer FAQPage markup. What matters is that the questions and answers exist as visible text. On jw2d.com we keep FAQPage on pages where the same questions are shown to readers.
What is worth marking up
- Organization (or LocalBusiness). Google says it helps it understand administrative details and disambiguate your organization; there are no required properties. Useful: name, legalName, url, logo, address, telephone, email, sameAs (profiles on other sites), vatID and other identifiers.
- Services and prices. In our practice, marking up services with prices helps keep the facts on the page and in the markup identical — the main point for AI.
- Articles. Author, publication and update dates make it clear who wrote the text and when.
- Breadcrumbs. They show the structure of the site.
The most common mistake is markup that contradicts the page: a different price, an old address or a phone number that is not on the site. Google and Bing both require markup to match visible content.
How to check
- Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator show whether the markup is readable.
- Compare every value in the markup with the visible text: name, address, phone, prices.
- Keep one source of facts for the whole site so that the markup and pages update together.
