Gemini SEO: how to get your business into Google Gemini answers
Yakiv Romanchuk, founder of JW2D · Published
Short answer
When the Gemini app grounds its answers on the web, it uses content from the Google Search index, so a site that is not indexed in Google has little chance of appearing. The Google-Extended setting in robots.txt controls both Gemini training and this grounding in the Gemini app, but does not affect Google Search. The Gemini web app is available in Estonia and in Estonian. Gemini may show links to sources, but not every answer has them, so check your visibility with real questions on a fixed schedule.
How Gemini gets information from websites
Google describes grounding as providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time to improve factuality and relevancy. It names grounding in the Gemini apps among the uses controlled by the Google-Extended token. In practice this means Gemini relies on the same index as Google Search: if Google has not indexed your pages, Gemini cannot ground on them.
According to Gemini Apps Help, Gemini may provide links to sources and related content, including public websites. A Sources button then appears at the bottom of a response or inline. Google also notes that not all responses include related links or sources.
Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode
The Gemini app is not the same as the AI features in Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and are reported in Search Console. For the Gemini app we have not found an official report for site owners.
The Google-Extended setting
| What Google-Extended controls | What it does not affect |
|---|---|
| Whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models | Inclusion of the site in Google Search |
| Grounding in the Gemini apps and in Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI | Ranking in Google Search |
Google-Extended has no separate user agent: Google crawls with its usual crawlers, and the token only works as a rule in robots.txt. If you write Disallow: / for Google-Extended, Google Search does not change, but, according to Google’s description, your content may no longer be used for grounding in the Gemini apps. On jw2d.com, Google-Extended is allowed — see which AI crawlers to allow.
Does Gemini work in Estonia
Yes. According to Gemini Apps Help, the Gemini web app is available in more than 230 countries and territories and in more than 70 languages; Estonia is on the list of countries and Estonian is on the list of languages. Customers in Estonia can ask Gemini in Estonian, Russian or English, so check all three.
What to do
- Indexing in Google. Check your important pages with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console and fix pages that are not indexed.
- robots.txt. Do not block Googlebot, and decide consciously about Google-Extended: blocking it also limits grounding in the Gemini app.
- Facts in text. Write what you do, where, for whom and at what price in plain HTML text, the same on every page and profile (our practice).
- Google Business Profile for local businesses. Both of our Gemini case studies are local businesses in Tallinn; see local business in AI search.
- Sources and numbers. In the GEO research, adding quotations, statistics and sources increased visibility in AI answers. Gemini was not among the tested systems, so treat this as a general recommendation.
Examples: Gemini recommends our clients
- Prjanja — Gemini lists it first for “Where in Tallinn can I order designer gingerbread” (asked in Russian); screenshot of 15 September 2026.
- Smoked House — Gemini lists it second for “Where in Tallinn can I buy smoked fish” (asked in Russian); screenshot of 15 September 2026.
AI answers change, so each case is recorded with the question, the date and a screenshot.
How to check whether Gemini recommends you
Make a list of 10–30 questions your customers ask, in their languages. Ask them in Gemini once a month, open Sources and record: whether your company is mentioned, in which position, whether your site is among the sources and who is recommended instead. Keep the list the same so the results are comparable (our method; more in AI visibility).
