Google AI Mode: what it is and how businesses can appear in it

Yakiv Romanchuk, founder of JW2D · Published

Short answer

AI Mode is a separate AI search experience in Google: you ask a question, get an AI-generated answer with links to web sources and can continue with follow-up questions. It splits the question into subtopics and searches for each of them at once. AI Mode is available in Estonia, including in Estonian and Russian. To be linked in AI Mode, a page must be indexed by Google and eligible to appear with a snippet — the same requirement as for AI Overviews.

What Google AI Mode is

Google calls AI Mode its most powerful AI search experience. Unlike AI Overviews, which appear above regular results, AI Mode is a separate place you choose: the AI Mode button on the Google search page, google.com/ai or the Google app.

In AI Mode a person asks a question, gets an AI-generated answer with links to web sources and can ask follow-up questions in the same conversation. Google says AI Mode divides a question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously.

When AI Mode launched

  • March 2025 — Google introduced AI Mode as an experiment in Search Labs.
  • 20 May 2025 — at Google I/O, Google started rolling out AI Mode to everyone in the U.S. without a Labs sign-up and announced a new AI Mode tab in Search.
  • 7 October 2025 — Google added more than 35 languages and over 40 countries and territories, bringing AI Mode to over 200 countries and territories.
  • Estonia — Google’s help page lists Estonia among the AI Mode countries, and Estonian and Russian among the supported languages.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs Gemini

“Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?” is one of the most frequent AI Mode questions in our AnswerThePublic data. Google says it brought a custom version of Gemini 2.5 into Search for AI Mode and AI Overviews in the U.S., so AI Mode is powered by Gemini models, but it is a Google Search experience, not the Gemini app.

What a website needs to appear in AI Mode

Google Search Central gives the same rules for AI Mode as for AI Overviews:

  • the page is indexed by Google and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet;
  • there are no additional technical requirements;
  • no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup are needed.

Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out”, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics. In practice this means your page can be cited for a narrow sub-question even if it does not rank for the main query.

How to increase the chance of being linked

  1. Cover sub-questions. Because AI Mode splits a question into subtopics, write separate clear answers for prices, timing, location, process and comparisons — not one general page.
  2. Follow Google’s basics. Allow crawling, put important content in text, keep structured data consistent with visible text, keep Google Business Profile and Merchant Center data up to date.
  3. Make answers self-contained. In our practice, a paragraph that answers a question without needing the rest of the page is easier for AI to quote.

How to measure traffic from AI Mode

Google says sites appearing in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. A separate AI Mode line is not mentioned in the documentation.
