What is answer engine optimization (AEO) and how it differs from GEO and SEO

Short answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content the direct answer that an “answer engine” gives — an AI assistant, an AI summary in search or a voice assistant — instead of just a link in a list. In practice AEO, GEO (generative engine optimization), LLMO (LLM optimization) and AI SEO describe largely the same work: being clear, verifiable and easy to quote for AI systems. There is no official standard behind any of these names; what Google and Bing publish are guidelines for their own AI features.

What AEO means

An answer engine is a system that gives a ready answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, voice assistants. AEO is everything you do so that this answer is built on your content and names your business.

Interest in the term is real: according to our AnswerThePublic data for the United States (October 2026), “answer engine optimization” is searched about 2,400 times a month, and “what is answer engine optimization” about 720 times.

AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI SEO: one job, several names

Term Full name Emphasis
AEO Answer engine optimization Becoming the direct answer, including in voice and AI assistants
GEO Generative engine optimization Visibility in answers written by generative AI; the term comes from a 2023 research paper
LLMO LLM optimization How large language models read, understand and cite your content
AI SEO AI search engine optimization An umbrella term for SEO aimed at AI search; also used for SEO done with AI tools

None of these names is an official standard. The only formally defined one is GEO: the term was introduced in the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., arXiv, November 2023; KDD 2024). For a business the label matters less than the work behind it, which is the same in all cases.

How AEO differs from classic SEO

  • Result. SEO aims for a high position in the list of links; AEO aims to be quoted or named inside the answer.
  • Unit of content. In SEO the page ranks; in AEO a specific passage that answers a question is used.
  • Measurement. SEO tracks rankings and clicks; AEO tracks mentions, citations and the accuracy of what AI says about you.

The foundation is shared. Google states that to be shown as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines cover indexing, ranking and grounding for Copilot in one document. Without SEO basics, AEO has nothing to stand on.

What actually helps, according to the sources

  1. Explicit facts. Bing’s guidelines say URLs are more likely to be selected for grounding and citations when facts and definitions are explicit and important information is visible on the URL itself.
  2. Clear, focused content. Bing asks for content that fully satisfies user intent and is easy to understand without external context.
  3. Quotes, statistics and sources. In the GEO paper these changes increased visibility in AI answers the most; keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement.
  4. Structured data that matches the page. Google and Bing both say markup must match visible content; Bing adds that it may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility.
  5. Question-and-answer format. In our practice, a page that answers a specific question in the first sentences is the easiest to quote.

Bing’s guidelines treat attempts to manipulate language models — including prompt injection — as abuse that can lead to reduced visibility or delisting. AEO is about clarity, not tricks.

FAQ

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Optimizing content so that AI assistants, AI search summaries and voice assistants use it as the direct answer and name your business.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice they describe the same work. GEO is the term from a 2023 research paper; AEO emphasizes becoming the direct answer. Neither is an official standard.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Google and Bing build their AI answers on indexed pages, so AEO depends on SEO basics such as indexing, crawlability and clear content.

What is the most important AEO tactic?

Explicit, verifiable facts and clear answers to specific questions. Bing’s guidelines and the GEO research both point in this direction.

Is structured data required for AEO?

Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features; Bing says structured data may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility. In both cases it must match the visible text.
