Local business in AI search: Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent data
Yakiv Romanchuk, founder of JW2D · Published
Short answer
Google ranks local results by three factors: relevance, distance and prominence; reviews, ratings and links from other websites add to prominence. There is no way to pay for a better local ranking. For AI search the same work counts: Google lists an up-to-date Business Profile among its recommendations for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and AI answers repeat what they find about your company online — so the name, address, phone, hours and prices must be the same everywhere.
Why this matters for local businesses
In our AnswerThePublic data for the United States (October 2026), “seo for local business” and “google business profile for local seo” are each searched about 2,400 times a month, and “local seo citation” about 1,600 times. Local companies want to understand how to be found — and now also how to be named by AI when someone asks “where in Tallinn can I…”.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google’s Business Profile help names three main factors:
| Factor | What it means (according to Google) |
|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your Business Profile matches what the person is searching for; complete and detailed information helps |
| Distance | How far your business is from the searcher or from the location in the query |
| Prominence | How well known your business is; links from other websites, review count and ratings contribute |
Google adds that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.
How this connects to AI answers
- Google AI features. In its guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google recommends keeping Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.
- Explicit, consistent facts. Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines say content is more likely to be used in grounded answers when facts are explicit and entities — names of companies, places, products — are defined clearly and consistently.
- Our practice. When the address, hours or prices differ between the website, Google profile and directories, AI answers repeat the error or skip the company.
An example from Tallinn: for questions asked in Russian, Gemini names our clients Prjanja first for designer gingerbread and Smoked House second for smoked fish. Both are local businesses; see the AI case studies.
Plan for a local business
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Google names verification among its tips.
- Fill it in completely: category, address, phone, website, hours including holiday hours, attributes, services, photos.
- Collect and answer reviews. Google recommends replying to reviews; review count and ratings add to prominence.
- Use one version of company data everywhere: website, Google, Bing Places, directories, social profiles (our practice).
- Add LocalBusiness or Organization markup with the same name, address and phone as on the page; Google says structured data must match visible content.
- Write pages that answer local questions: “where in Tallinn…”, “how much does … cost in Estonia”, with prices and an address.
Watch out for offers to “guarantee first place on the map”. Google states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
