AI visibility: what it is and how to measure it

Short answer
AI visibility is how often and how AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews — mention your business, cite your pages and send you visitors. It is measured in three layers: mentions in answers to your key questions, citations of your pages (Bing Webmaster Tools shows them for Copilot and Bing AI summaries), and visits (ChatGPT marks them with utm_source=chatgpt.com, Google counts AI Overviews traffic inside Search Console).
What AI visibility is
In classic search, visibility means a position in the list of links. In AI answers there is no list: the assistant writes a text and names a few companies or sources. AI visibility is your share of those answers.
The research paper that introduced generative engine optimization measured visibility in a similar way: by how much of the generated answer is based on a source, taking its position in the answer into account, and by a subjective assessment of how prominent the source is.
What to measure
| Metric | What it shows | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | In how many of your key questions the AI names your business | Regular manual or automated checks of a fixed set of questions |
| Position and accuracy | Whether you are named first or last, and whether prices, services and location are described correctly | The same checks, recorded with the answer text |
| Citations | Which of your pages AI answers link to and how often | Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance (Copilot, Bing AI summaries) |
| Visits from ChatGPT | How many people came from ChatGPT answers | Google Analytics: source utm_source=chatgpt.com |
| Visits from Google AI features | Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google Search Console → Performance → “Web” (counted together with regular search) |
| Leads | How many customers say they found you through AI | A “How did you find us?” field in the form or a question during the first call |

Bing Webmaster Tools — AI Performance
On 10 February 2026 Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools (public preview). The report shows how often your content is cited in AI answers across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations: total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries (the phrases the AI used to retrieve your content) and citations per page.
ChatGPT referrals in analytics
OpenAI states that ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Filter your analytics by this source to see visits, behaviour and conversions from ChatGPT. OpenAI notes this works for sites that allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler.
Google Search Console
Google says that sites appearing in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. You will see the clicks and impressions, but not as a separate AI Overviews line.
How to check AI answers yourself
- Make a list of 20–50 questions your customers really ask: “Where in Tallinn…”, “Which company…”, “How much does… cost”. Search data from tools like AnswerThePublic and questions from sales calls help.
- Ask each assistant the same questions — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot — in the languages of your customers.
- Record the result: are you mentioned, in which position, what is said about you, which competitors and sources are named.
- Repeat monthly with the same list, so changes are comparable.
AI answers vary from one request to another. One check proves little; trends over several months on the same set of questions are what matter.
How to improve AI visibility
Google and Bing give similar advice: make content easy to find, read and verify. Google lists allowing crawling, important content in text, good page experience and structured data that matches the visible text. Bing’s search team writes that grounded AI answers need clear, structured and verifiable information, and that stale facts can directly produce wrong answers. The GEO research adds that quotations, statistics and citations of sources increased visibility in AI answers the most. We describe the full process in the article What is generative engine optimization (GEO).

FAQ
What is AI visibility?
How often and how AI assistants mention your business, cite your pages and send you visitors.
How can I check my AI visibility for free?
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot a fixed list of customer questions every month, check AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools, and filter Google Analytics by utm_source=chatgpt.com.
Is Google visibility the same as AI visibility?
No, but they are connected. Google AI Overviews only link to indexed pages eligible for a snippet, and ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers including Bing, so poor search visibility usually means poor AI visibility.
Does Search Console show AI Overviews traffic separately?
According to Google, AI features traffic is included in the overall “Web” search traffic in the Performance report; the documentation does not mention a separate filter.
How often should AI visibility be measured?
In our practice, monthly on the same set of questions: AI answers vary, so trends matter more than single checks.
